Well, it’s mid-August here in Charleston County, and that means only one thing – it’s back to school time! Most kids aren’t exactly thrilled at the prospect of heading back to the classroom, but I know that I surely am (anyone remember this Staples commercial from the 90’s? Yeah, that’s how we feel at my house, too!). We’ve been prepping for weeks – haircuts, doctor’s appointments, clothes and shoe shopping, selecting the perfect lunchbox . . . and now the time is here. And while it seems that the summer has simply flown by, I feel like I’ve been holding onto these images for FOREVER.
I was inspired by Julia’s 3D glasses to do this back to school shoot back in May. Apparently faux glasses are quite the thing these days (back when I was in third grade, wearing glasses was definitely OUT) – she had popped the lenses out of these disposable babies and was wearing them all over the place. I had picked up this antique desk over a year ago at Ann’s Country Heart Antiques in Shelby, NC for God-only-knew-when, and I knew that if I threw in an apple and some books it had the makings for a super-fun concept.
Julia is one of my favorite subjects because, unlike many nine year-olds, she always comes to a shoot full of creative ideas and positive energy. She is super-smart and sassy, and these images totally capture her dazzling personality. I wish this sweet girl all the luck in the world as she embarks upon fourth grade – I know she’ll be simply fabulous.
