Fun with Color: Mommy & Me Session {Mount Pleasant Lifestyle Photographer}

This fun-with-color mommy & me session was partially inspired by the Color Run and partially from our southern snowball fight last summer.  I was dying to try out some of the holi powder sessions I had seen featured by some fellow photographers (usually with seniors or engaged couples, but I wanted to put a new twist on it), and I am so glad that my friend Paige and her darling daughter Hadley were game to be be my guinea pigs!  An incredibly talented Charleston wedding photographer, Paige, like most of us camera-wielding moms, is rarely ever in front of the lens with her child.  For me, the month of May was a celebration of motherhood, and so in that spirit I concentrated many of my sessions on the bond between mother and child.

Even though Hadley was unsure of what to do with the powder, she most certainly created in her own way and helped to make an incredible, beautiful mess!  When she was through, she methodically stacked all the bowls, dusted herself off, and did what toddlers do best – run around in circles 🙂  Quite honestly, I think she had the most fun making her mama a mess, as she preferred to be the neat, clean and organized one.

Because I knew I would be dealing with a little one, I wanted to ensure that this process would be safe for her.  I’d read some scary articles about authentic holi powder from India potentially containing all kinds of heavy metals and toxic chemicals.  Now I know better than to believe everything that I read on the internet, but just to be on the safe side, I found a US-based company called Hippie Powder that supplies the powder paint to many of the area’s Color Runs and crafts their powder paint from cornstarch and food-grade dyes.  And the best part about it?  Washes out in the laundry!  So if you’re looking for some good old summer fun with your kiddos, grab yourself some Hippie Powder, and have a powder paint fight in the backyard – just don’t forget to keep your mouth closed . . .
