Graduation Announcements are Here!

Y’all, graduation is literally right around the corner. We knew this day would sneak up on us, but there are still so many things to do to get ready . . . whether you are having a graduation party or you just want to shout your excitement from the rooftops with some graduation announcements, let me help you get this task checked off your list!

I hadn’t given much thought to the nuances of graduation announcements before my kids were in high school, but I have a few tips to help you start thinking about why you need graduation announcements for your senior.

ANNOUNCEMENTS vs. INVITATIONS

Even in pre-Covid times it seemed that most graduations were limited to the number of family members that could attend the actual graduation ceremony. Now, in many cases, there aren’t even enough spots to include a senior’s siblings! So unless you are hosting a graduation party or open house, actual INVITATIONS to graduation are usually not necessary.

On the other hand, a graduation announcement is the perfect way to commemorate this truly special event and to thank those people who supported your senior along the way. And maybe also to brag about them a little bit (hey, there is absolutely NO SHAME in being the very proud parent of a high school grad!)😉.

GRADUATION ANNOUNCEMENT TIPS

Some guidelines on what to include and some grad announcement etiquette:

  • Announce your senior’s academic achievements and future plans (college attending, intended major, career path, sport they will play, etc.)
  • Typically mailed AFTER the event has taken place – within 2 weeks after graduation is a good guide
  • Send to those people that genuinely care about your senior: family, close friends, people on your holiday card list, teachers/tutors, employers (that family they babysat for really IS excited for them!), etc.

GRADUATION GRATITUDE

The goal of the announcement is to share the joy of your senior’s accomplishment and to create a keepsake for the future. Folks aren’t obligated to send a gift when they receive a grad announcement, but it’s likely that your senior will receive gifts. Make sure to send thank you cards within two weeks of the receipt of the gift. It doesn’t have to be elaborate; something short & sweet, handwritten and timely is all that is required to show true appreciation for the gift-giver’s thoughtfulness.
