It seems like such a simple thing, and yet “what should I do with my hands?” is one of the most common questions I get when posing my clients. If you’ve ever seen Ricky Bobby on Talladega Nights, you’ll know that you aren’t alone 😉 All you need is a little bit of guidance, and you’ll be able to comfortably put your hands someplace appropriate every single time.
It’s generally best to give your hands a job, something to do, so that they aren’t hanging stiff and tense at your sides. Here are some quick and easy tips!
Tip #1: Use Your Pants
This one is fairly easy since people are often wearing pants or shorts that have pockets and belt loops (even some dresses and skirts have pockets!). It’s best done while standing, and also works in closeup shots.
In the first example, you can simply put your hands in your front pants pockets (leave your thumb out and don’t stick your entire hand into your pockets – it will leave your arm looking like it ends with no hand at all). In the second example, you can put your hands in your rear pockets for a little bit of a changeup. Finally, you can casually put your thumb through your belt loop (this can look contrived and cowboy-like if you do it with both hands – one is fine, and let the other arm casually hang by your side).
Also note in all of these examples that there are lots of angles! These poses allow your elbows, wrists and fingers to bend so that you look relaxed and comfortable. Your hands have something to do, and your arms are spaced away from your body, allowing your shape to be showcased.
Tip #2: Use Your Hair – COMING SOON!
Tip #3: Use Accessories – COMING SOON!
If you practice some of these suggestions in the mirror and figure out which ones work best for you in certain circumstances (sitting vs. standing vs. group shots) then you’ll never again have to ask the question “What do I do with my hands?”
