Despite some pre-class jitters (public speaking gives me sweaty palms!), I had an amazing time teaching this group of eight women this past weekend at my Snap Happy: Photography 101 class! They are all moms who simply want to take better pictures of their own families on a daily basis. We crammed a lot of information into two hours; we touched on topics such as finding quality light, taking more control of your camera, getting rid of that pesky flash indoors, and finding ways to better engage your subject (and getting rid of that “cheeeeeese!” face).
We get hands-on outside to put some of our newfound knowledge into practice. Many thanks to Holly for getting ME in a pic trying to wrangle our little “models”!
We discussed a bit about depth of field and the effect of different apertures on your image. Here we see that with a large aperture (small f-stop, here it is f/2.8), depth of field is narrow and only one subject is in focus – anything in front of or behind the subject will appear blurred. When we decrease the aperture size (larger f-stop, here it is f/22) the depth of field is large and pretty much everything in your frame will be in focus.
Thank you so much to Mandy, Holly, Amy, Jennifer, Dawn, Joni, Elizabeth, and Meredith for being such fabulous students! I love sharing my knowledge and passion with others, and I can’t wait for the next one 🙂
