Selecting attire for a family photo session seems to be one of the primary things clients find the most challenging about a family session. Not only is it important that everyone in the family compliments one another, it’s also critical that each member of the family retain their own identity and feel comfortable in their selected attire. There is no faster way to elicit mopey faces when children feel trussed up and uncomfortable.
When the DeMouras arrived at our shooting location, I told Jamie that I thought they had just stepped right out of the pages of a what-to-wear guide in their picture perfect shades of blue and brown! Little guy Cannon was the perfect little Southern gentleman in a dapper button-down collared shirt, but was still comfy enough to scale the old oak trees that are always so irresistible to little boys. Preteen Cally wore a winning combination of sweet and sassy with a touch of glitz in her cozy sweater dress and stylish ballet flats. Mom was gorgeous in a knit dress (the stunning shade of blue complementing Cannon’s subtle gingham print) and tall boots, which allowed them to tromp happily through the tall grasses and mud of the plantation. And dad tied it all together in a grown-up version of Cannon’s attire: classically styled checked shirt with oh-so-casually rolled cuffs, khaki slacks, and coordinating caramel leather loafers and belt.
And while it’s true that wardrobe does play a key role in a successful portrait session, the best part about my afternoon with this family was their clear love and affection for one another. There were lots of hugs, snuggles, piggyback rides, and even a few smooches between mom and dad that had me wishing that every family was just as genuinely happy together as this one is.
