TRENDING: The Front Steps Project
It is currently Day 7 of our social distancing, and it it evident that this will be something that lasts far longer than anyone in our household initially imagined. As a portrait photographer whose very livelihood is dependent upon interacting with people, I’ve struggled to see how I can continue to use my skills to help others during this unprecedented time . . . and TIME is something that we seem to have an abundance of right now.
Amidst all the sadness and loss that so many of my clients and friends are experiencing (high school seniors are missing huge milestones like prom and graduation, lovingly-planned weddings are postponed, businesses are closing for an indeterminate amount of time), I choose to see the silver lining . . . Families are together all day long. We school from home. We work from home. College students have had to move back home. The day-to-day “busyness” is gone, and we have been given a gift of togetherness. Joyful celebrations are still happening, albeit in a smaller and more private setting. There is no better time to document your family.
I’ve been inspired by Cara Soulia Photography in Boston, MA, and Follow Greg Sports in Cary, NC among many others who are getting out into their communities to spread joy (but NOT the coronavirus!) to their neighbors. The Front Steps Project is a way to do that – to bring a little joy and community to all of this isolation.
Beginning Monday, March 23 (and until I am still able due to evolving guidelines) I am taking five-minute portraits of East Cooper residents on their front steps or porch. I will email your portrait directly to you within a few days. There is no fee and no catch, but I would ask that you make a donation to the Lowcountry Food Bank to help support their efforts in helping feed the most vulnerable communities in our area during this uncertain time.
Portraits will only be taken outside, and I will be using a long lens to ensure that I stay at least ten feet away. This will be a little different than my normal family sessions, so feel free to get creative! No need for a Pinterest mood board 😉 Want to do it in your pajamas? Awesome. Bring your dogs.
To schedule your portraits, please click here (and ensure you put your address in the optional Message box). I can’t wait to see you (from 10 feet away!!).
UPDATE 3/27: I have had such an incredible response to this project and am so grateful for all of those who are so enthusiastic to give to Lowcountry Food Bank. In order to do my part in flattening the curve, I will no longer be shooting but PLEASE still consider a donation and please contact me with your name, phone number and address (neighborhood) so that I can add you to my list to shoot after our period of social distancing is over 😊 Stay well!
