Tips for Capturing Great Fall Photos

Fall may be my favorite season, mainly because it’s short and sweet. Growing up in South Florida and currently living in the coastal South, we don’t get much in the way of crisp temperatures and golden foliage. So when we do get to experience the glory that is fall, I definitely want to document it to hold onto it for a little bit longer. Here are some of my favorite tips to capturing great fall photos.

Focus on the Light

The light in the fall is warm and golden because of the way the Earth is tilted away from the sun. This is a great time of year to soak in those long shadows and that early evening (late afternoon, depending on where you live) hazy, golden glow. My favorite time of day to shoot is about an hour before sunset – they don’t call it “the golden hour” for nothing!

Use Natural Props

There is always an abundance of leaves and sticks and pinecones on the ground in the fall. Why not incorporate them into your shots to convey the season? There’s always the traditional leaf pile, but think about other ways to use natural elements in your shot.

Seek out Nature’s Frames

Get creative and think about your surroundings in a different way. You can utilize the environment around you to create the perfect framing for your subjects. I especially love centering my subjects under a canopy of trees or framing them between tree branches.

Document the Activities of the Season

Halloween is an obvious one, but don’t forget about your trip to the pumpkin patch, carving jack-o-lanterns, football games, and the odd October hurricane 😜

Have FUN!

Fall is a time of celebrations and gatherings: Halloween, Thanksgiving, fire pits, oyster roasts, football . . . the weather is beautiful, and it is the perfect time to get outside and make memories with your family. Don’t forget to document them!
