What is a Certified Professional Photographer?

What is a Certified Professional Photographer and Why Should I Care?

I am a self-taught photographer, meaning that I didn’t get my degree in photography (if you’re curious, I have my Bachelors in Public Health and my Masters in Accounting, neither of which has been particularly helpful in the creative field). Everything that I have learned I have picked up on my own, from books, from mentors, from in-person and online workshops, from YouTube (yes, YOUTUBE), from coaches, from conferences, from being a member of professional organizations, from many hours of hard work.

After ten years in business I decided it was high time to declare myself a candidate for certification in professional photography. What exactly does that mean – what IS a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP)?

Every industry has its benchmark, and the CPP designation is the benchmark for the photography industry. It shows that one is a master of her craft and has acquired the skills necessary for photographic excellence.

The certification is granted by the Professional Photographers of America – the world’s largest non-profit trade organization for photographers.  Established in 1868, the PPA currently holds over 30,000 members and is dedicated to helping photographers be more protected, be more profitable, be more creative, be more sustainable, and be more successful.

Certified Professional Photographer Requirements:

  1. Declare candidacy
  2. Pass the exam – the exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions and takes up to three hours
  3. Pass the technical image evaluation – each candidate is required to submit three images that depict key photographic techniques
  4. Recertify every three years with Continuing Education requirements – CPP recertification process is there to encourage CPPs to continue their journey in photography education and professional development. By participating in continuing education, CPPs help to raise the bar of the industry

What does this mean for YOU?

The CPP program empowers photographers to be knowledgeable, successful, and technically-equipped. As a client/consumer, when you choose a photographer who is Certified, you’re starting with quality. You hire a trained professional who can consistently meet and surpass your expectations. Make your choice easier. Start with the best and see the difference a Certified Professional Photographer makes.  I am so excited to take this next step in my photographic journey!

P.S. According to the most recent PPA search, there are only FIVE Certified Professional Photographers within 100 miles of Charleston, SC. I am honored to be added to this prestigious list.
