Why Choose a Spring Session?

Spring Sessions for Seniors

Spring fever is a real thing: we’re all itching for the colder days of winter to be over. Warmer temperatures, longer days and blooming flowers are on the way! Every single season has its pros and cons for a session. Let’s take a look at Senior sessions in the spring (I consider spring sessions to be March-May).

Spring Session: Color Palettes

spring color palette: jessamine
spring color palette: noisette
spring color palette: wisteria

Here in the Lowcountry we see flowers starting to bloom at the end of February throughout the summer. Colors are pastel and feminine and can be found in locations all over town. Keep in mind that different plants flower at different times during these months, so try not to be married to any one particular bloom.

Hibernation season is over, and boutiques now have fun clothing in all the happy colors of spring: tanks, sundresses, rompers, maxis, sandals, shorts. Textures like ruffles and pleats and dainty jewelry accents are making their debut this time of year.  Layering (which I love!) jackets and sweaters with cute skirts and dresses is a popular look. If this is the kind of wardrobe that you love, then a spring session might just be the right one for you.

Spring Session: Scheduling

Second semester of your Senior year has begun and the finish line is in sight! Things are starting to feel real, and excitement is in the air. College acceptances are rolling in, prom and graduation are right around the corner.

Here comes the tricky part . . . schedules in the spring are often CRAZY. Between spring sports, performances, AP/SAT/ACT exams, and all the other events that go along with the end of your high school career, spring schedules can fill up in a hurry. It can be stressful to juggle all of these things at one time, and a Senior session can become one of those things you’re just trying to fit in. A Senior session typically runs about 2-3 hours (depending on hair and makeup), and it’s not something that should be rushed if you want to have any fun.

In addition, the weather in the spring can be very unpredictable. Sure, it may be getting warmer, but it’s definitely a rainy and windy season and you have to keep your expectations realistic about the possibilities of rescheduling due to bad weather. “April Showers” are no joke around here . . .

On the plus side, days are getting longer and we have more and more daylight with each passing day. Outdoor sessions this time of year can begin about 4:30 to 6:00 pm.

Is a Spring Session for Me?

If you are DYING for a spring session, I highly recommend scheduling it in the spring of your JUNIOR year. That allows you to have the spring flowers, the colorful palette and wardrobe, the warm weather and longer days WITHOUT the stress of trying to fir in in last-minute as you wrap up your last year of high school.

But what if I want to incorporate my college tee or prom dress or cap & gown into my senior session? Since these are quick sessions that take less than 30 minutes, I always offer a spring add-on to my Seniors who want to incorporate a few of these shots into their completed album or portfolio box. It’s the best of both worlds!

Overall, spring is really a great time to schedule a session (and EVEN BETTER if you are a Junior and can cross this off your list early in the year). Whatever season you choose for your senior portraits, I promise that you will have an AMAZING experience!
