3 Ways to Prep for a Smooth Session Day

There’s no other way to say it: the more prepared you are for your session, the better your pictures will be. PERIOD. But there is NO reason to stress! Scroll down for my top three ways to prep for a smooth session day.

Prep for a smooth session day - try on outfits in the mirror

Organize Your Outfits

Having a variety of outfits to wear on session day gives you so much more variety when selecting your finished images – from casual to formal, sports uniforms and prom gowns, and everything in between!

Gather up one outfit at a time, complete with undergarments, accessories and shoes. Try the whole thing on in front of the mirror and check to make sure you feel great in it, all the way around. Check for stains, loose or missing buttons, holes, pulled threads, etc. and make sure to take care of those little things before you arrive.

Steam or iron out any wrinkles (they are almost impossible to fix in Photoshop), and hang up your entire outfit on ONE hanger. Place accessories and jewelry in a sealed ziploc bag and hang on the hanger. This way you won’t forget a thing!

Prep for a smooth session day by creating a Pinterest board to plan outfits, makeup, locations, etc.

Create a Pinterest Board

Sometimes it’s easier to SHOW what you want your session to look like rather than trying to explain in words. Create an old-school collage of makeup looks, locations, hairstyles, poses, outfit inspo, etc. to share with me so that I can help customize a style that is uniquely YOU. It also helps to show things that you DON’T like so that I can make sure to avoid them.

prep for a smooth session day by packing an emergency bag with lip gloss, powder, hairbrush, snacks, etc.

Pack a Small Emergency Bag

I always bring a Client Comfort Kit along on my sessions that has things like safety pins, bug spray and a lint roller. But it’s always nice to have your PERSONAL preference of items such as snacks, bottled water, lip gloss, powder, a hairbrush, hairspray, blotting paper, tissues, etc. I’ve always found that when you ARE prepared you usually don’t need the things, but when you AREN’T prepared, you wish you had them (oh, the irony of carrying around an umbrella on a sunny day) – this will give you the peace of mind to know that you are prepared for anything. Also, bringing a small bag along allows you to stash your keys and phone so you can get them out of your pockets!

As you can see, the little details do matter – the better you plan for your session, the better your outcome will be. And when you book with me I send a Welcome Packet full of tips and tricks to help keep you calm and prepared for your big day – I’m here to help you every step of the way!!
