While it’s true that I live in historic Charleston – a city renowned for its natural grace, beauty and charm – I’m always eager to travel to photograph families and children in new and interesting locales! Classic case of “the grass is always greener” I suppose, but since I’ve become friends with photographers all over the globe, I constantly have images come up in my Facebook or Instagram feeds that make me long for a little something different. Last spring I took notice when friends from all over Texas posted images of these “bluebonnet sessions” that made me want to jump right on a plane to check out these rolling fields of indigo that reminded me of those poppy fields outside the Emerald City in the Wizard of Oz.
Luckily, I got my chance just last weekend when I took a trip to visit some dear friends who had moved just outside of Dallas. As I drove my rental car (at breakneck speeds, I might add – Texans have a bit of a lead foot, it seems!) to their house from the airport, I was expecting to see bluebonnets as far as the eye could see. Boy, was I wrong! It was a bit of a challenge to find such a field in the concrete jungle surrounding the city, but thanks to the fine folks at Texas Bluebonnet Sightings, we were able to locate a little patch of blue in Los Colinas. Add in a little golden hour flare and some sweet siblings, and you have the perfect recipe for a fabulous photo shoot that I could never have executed at home. Thank you so much to the wonderful and amazing Gordillo family for welcoming me into their home and allowing me to drag them and their children halfway through the state at dinnertime to find my little slice of heaven.
