Ahh, photographing siblings! It is a general rule that when faced with a camera, they put on comedic show the likes of which are only seen when Mom is reeeeally begging them to be good and smile. In my experience with photographing children, it is generally best if you go into a session with an open mind and the ability to be flexible. For this particular session, I was planning to do a whole airplane theme with paper airplanes and Jack’s sweet wooden plane that he put together all by himself.
However, when we got to the park, Allie (who hadn’t had her afternoon nap) had a death grip on Sofia the First, and Jack was pouting and literally running away from the camera since we weren’t at the park where we had originally promised we’d go. In typical fashion, they were running in completely opposite directions, making a sibling shot of them together a bit of a challenge.
We decided to head to a different park (“the one with the super-cool misty things” according to Jack) to try our luck there. Once pacified (Jack) and warmed up (Allie), the kids had a great time! There were loooong sidewalks here to zoom around with airplanes, a patch of delicious-smelling clover to pick and a wooden bridge to sit and soak in the waterfront sunset. Oh, and of course the super-cool misty things.
Even though the whole airplane theme didn’t go as planned, I was glad that I grabbed a handful of sidewalk chalk from their garage on our way out the door. You never know when that might come in handy! As the sun went down and we headed to the parking lot to leave, I handed over the chalk to the kids (who, by that point, seemed destined for an early bedtime) while the adults said our goodbyes. Pretty soon they were in their own worlds, drawing away on their masterpieces. And at the very end of our evening together, Allie finally got into the picture-taking and even requested to hit the button herself! I must say that she did a fine job on all of her photography attempts, and I am including my favorite Allie masterpiece here.
