Why Choose a Summer Session?

Summer Sessions for Seniors

Every single season has its pros and cons for a session. Let’s take a look at Senior sessions in the Summer (I consider Summer sessions to be June-September).

While summer is a time of sun kissed skin and natural highlights in your hair, you do have to consider a few things . . . It’s HOT, it’s humid and the mosquitos abound in many iconic Lowcountry spots.

Summer Session: Color Palettes

Here in the Lowcountry, the florals of spring are starting to fade but summer still provides some stunning blooms around town: Confederate jasmine, Carolina jessamine, gardenias, Noisette roses, crepe myrtles. Colors are vibrant, bright and fun (think: tropical vacation).

Clothing choices are easy-breezy to take advantage of all the warmth: shorts, tanks, sundresses, sandals, even bathing suits! Fabrics like cotton gauze and linen and lace, flowy maxi dresses and huge straw hats are very popular wardrobe options this time of year.  Despite the heat, this is my FAVORITE time of year for a session simply because of the wardrobe (I’m a sucker for a fun, elegant maxi dress or a swishy skirt).

Summer Session: Scheduling

Summer sessions are best for RISING seniors and scheduled the summer before senior year. This is an excellent time to book your session for many reasons, but the NUMBER ONE reason (and I mentioned this in my last blog post) is that once school starts your schedule will get crazy in a hurry. Over the summer there is no homework, no extracurriculars and no exams to worry about.

The days are long and mostly sunny – outdoor session this time of year typically begin around 6:00pm or 6:30pm, given that the sun doesn’t set until about 8:30 all summer long.

One thing to consider, however, is that August is the rainiest month of the year here in the Charleston area (we are known for late-afternoon whoppers of a thunderstorm). Hurricane season also begins June 1, although we typically see most hurricane disruption around the late summer time (September).

Is a Summer Session for Me?

If you are DYING for a summer session, I highly recommend scheduling it in the summer of your JUNIOR year (even though it seems really early). This allows you to have the summer flowers, lightweight and flowy wardrobe, the warm weather and longer days WITHOUT the stress of trying to schedule a session when you’re super-busy during the school year. If the weather doesn’t happen to cooperate, there is still PLENTY of time to reschedule!

But what if I want to incorporate my college or prom or cap & gown into my senior session? Since these are quick sessions that take less than 30 minutes, I always offer an add-on (in the spring, at the end of senior year) to my seniors who want to incorporate a few of these shots into their completed album or portfolio box.

Overall, summer is really a great time to schedule a session (and EVEN BETTER if you are a Junior and can cross this off your list early in the year). Whatever season you choose for your senior portraits, I promise that you will have an AMAZING experience!
