Winter Sessions for Seniors
Every single season has its pros and cons for a session. Let’s take a look at Senior sessions in the winter (I consider winter sessions to be post-Christmas through mid-March).
While winter is typically not considered a favorite time of year for a session, there definitely ARE some advantages to scheduling your session at the beginning of your last semester of high school.
Winter Session: Color Palettes
Here in the Lowcountry, we are fortunate enough that not everything dies and turns brown in the winter. Oak trees everywhere retain their green leaves, there is an abundance of Spanish moss, and camellias (in some of the most GORGEOUS shades of red and pink) are blooming this season. Colors are a bit more dark and muted.
Clothing choices are unique: this is really the only time of year that you can get into those cozy clothes and not sweat 😉 Layering pieces such as sweaters, blazers, and leather jackets makes your outfit look thoughtful and curated. Adding scarves and hats creates another layer of style (and BONUS – gives you something to do with your hands).
Winter Session: Scheduling
Winter days are short. The sun is gone by 5pm, so scheduling winter sessions can be tricky during the weekdays (unless you have an early-out or don’t mind leaving school early). Sessions begin no later than 3pm, but sunsets in the winter are EPIC and you will often catch the most beautiful skies of the year.
For some of you, you may already have gotten your college acceptances, but all college applications have been submitted. This will take a load off your plate! The beginning of a new semester is typically a little less intense than at the end, which gives you a little breathing room to schedule a session.
Is a Winter Session for Me?
If you are planning a session in downtown Charleston, the tourists are not as much a factor in the wintertime, so you won’t have an audience for your session.
If you are participating in winter sports (basketball or wrestling) you’ll have your uniform available in case you wanted to incorporate that into a session.
Sunsets are unbelievable, but days are short and scheduling after school can be a challenge.
It can be cold and windy (the average high temp in January is 59°), but there are NO BUGS! If you love layering clothing and hate sweating then a winter session might be perfect for you. Whatever season you choose for your senior portraits, I promise that you will have an AMAZING experience!
